Talent Campus application Reopened the call until Friday, 10 June at middday

Dear former participant of the Talent Campus,

Myriad films have been made on poverty but a large proportion of them are stereotypical approaches often seen on television. Experts call them “development porn“ as images of passive helplessness and deprivation are easy to absorb and easier to ignore. “Why Poverty?” aims to initiate a global dialogue on poverty through public media, challenging people to participate and come up with their own solutions to eradicate poverty.

This cross-media project, launched by Don Edkins, executive producer of the HIV/Aids project “Steps for the Future” and “Why Democracy?”, will comprise eight one-hour and thirty short documentary films to be distributed via innumerable international broadcasters, the internet and mobile platforms during a theme week in 2012. The films will depict how people find ways to overcome and fight poverty in daily life, fostering the belief that things can improve if we set our minds to it.

There are three lengths for the short films:

* 1 to 2 minutes - 10 films - inventive, viral films for use on the internet and mobile platforms
* 7 to 10 minutes - 10 films - Films that challenge perceptions of poverty and its representation
* 15 to 20 minutes - 10 films - Films that tackle solutions to poverty and create understanding

Budgets will be assessed film by film, up a maximum of:

* €6,000 for the viral shorts
* €20,000 for the 10 minute shorts
* €40,000 for the 20 minute shorts

"Kabul, I Love You" film project"

UNAMA is proud to announce a call for entries into the "Kabul, I Love You" film project.

We are calling upon young Afghan filmmakers to produce and direct a 10-minute short film in any genre and format (documentary, fiction, experimental, animation, drama, musical, etc) where filmmakers tell a story that illustrates the universality of love, and their love for Kabul city; love for its people, and for their country. Before beginning to film, filmmakers are called upon to submit a short synopsis/proposal (see below). English - Dari - Pashto

Submission guidelines:
-Each film should be a maximum of 10 minutes (screen time)
-Each project should be filmed in different locations of Kabul
-Each filmmaker should submit a synopsis (in English or in the chosen language - Dari or Pashto) a maximum of two A4 pages along with a copy of their previous work to UNAMA Multimedia Unit before 28 May 2011
-The synopsis should also include the time of filming (day and/or night)
-Each successful project will receive a small production budget
-The language of the film should be indicated in the film proposal
-If selected, film pitchteams must be available from 10 June 2011

All successful short films will be produced into one extended feature length movie and screenings will take place in selected and public venues across Kabul.

CANNES AWARD SHOCKER: Terrence Malick's 'The Tree Of Life' Wins Palme d'Or

In the end, it was the movie that has been the most talked about over the past twoCannes Film Festivals, so it was probably preordained, even in a great year for movies like this one has been, that Terrence Malick's epic dissertation on life would win the big prize, the Palme d'Or, and so it has. But Malick wasn't there to accept for The Tree of Life, and instead producers Bill Pohlad and Dede Gardner took the stage, saying he was too shy to show, a line they first used in their post-screening press conference and later tonight at a post-awards news conference. They were joined at the press confab by a jubilant Patrick Wachsberger of Summit, who has been handling international distribution, and EuropaCorp's Luc Besson. Pohlad said he talked to Malick just before the show and said, "I think

there's a chance we might win something." Gardner said Malick told her he would have thanked his wife and parents if he were there, but of course he wasn't there. Earlier in the week at the premiere, he skipped the news conference and the red carpet but appeared in the theatre to take applause and see the film. The Tree of Life was the sole competition entry to be designated as American, even though two other winners tonight, France's The Artist and Denmark's Drive, were both shot in L.A. but are classified this way because of the director's nationality.

First up for the press, though, was the jury led by Robert De Niro and including Uma Thurman, Jude Law, Linn Ullmann, Olivier Assayas, Mahamat Saleh-Haroun, Johnnie To, Nansun Shi and Martina Gusman. De Niro got the lion's share of questions and, as usual, was a man of few words in explaining the jury's thinking on the Palme d'Or selection. "Most of us felt very clearly it was the movie, the size of it, the importance seemed to fit the prize. Other movies were good also. It's a difficult process, and it's never quite 100%, but most of us thought it was terriifc," he said and was

even more succinct when asked about screenplay winner Joseph Cedar's Footnote ("very well written"), or picking French director Maiwenn's cop drama Poliss for the Jury Prize ("best solution for what we felt and that's it"). In fact, he repeatedly explained they had to make a decision, and these results are what they came up with, emphasizing there were no heated discussions on anything ("drama should be on the screen," he said), even the Lars von Trier situation in which the filmmaker, but not his film, was banned for his controversial comments about Nazis and Hitler in a press conference following the screening of Melancholia (for which the Jury awarded Kirsten Dunst Best Actress). "Whatever was gonna be was gonna be," De Niro explained. "The festival accepted the film, that was what was decided and that's fine."

French director Assayas added, "As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the best films, a great film. We all agree about the condemnation (of his remarks), but I loved the film." Asked by an Italian whether they seriously considered Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be The Place, De Niro said that all movies were taken into discussion and said he liked it and thought Sean Penn was terrific but, you guessed it, "as a group that's what we decided."

Law did reveal some non-award winners that they had "serious" discussions about in the positive sense, including Sleeping Beauty, La Havre, Pater, the "Pope" film (Habemus Papam), a list to which Ullmann then added Pedro Almodovar's film The Skin I Live In. As to whether they considered the widely popular black-and-white silent The Artist for the Palme d'Or, De Niro said the rules state only one award per film, and they gave it Best Actor for Jean Dujardin.

Ullmann mentioned the wide variety of movies dealing with themes of vulnerability, captivity and children, pointing out the large number of "amazing child performances" in the competition this year. She also praised De Niro as being "a very democratic president and a good listening president."

All of the winners came back to talk to the world's entertainment press with the exception of Dunst, who most likely did not want to have to address the inevitable von Trier "Hitler" questions, particularly after being seen all over YouTube squirming through the remarks the first time he said them at the news conference. She was graceful, though, in her acceptance speech, saying in part, "Wow what a week we've had. I want to thank the Cannes Film Festival for keeping our movie in competition, and Lars for making a brave film."

Drive's Best Director winner Nicolas Winding Refn thanked a number of people including one person for turning him on to "Russian oil money" so he could make his film in L.A. He and Ryan Gosling, who was with him at the ceremony and afterwards at the news conference, plan to reteam on a "big Hollywood film" for Warner Bros and Joel Silver, a remake of Logan's Run. At a lunch yesterday, both talked to me about it, but Gosling said it was just in delvelopment so far and Refn said it has to take the original story and go way into the future now. Both are a mutual admiration society. Drive opens Sept. 16 according to Bob Berney, who runs FilmDistrict, which is distributing. He has high awards hopes elsewhere and agreed with me that Albert Brooks' startling turn as a slimy villain could net him an Oscar nomination. Asked about a Drive 2 sequel, Refn jokingly said it "should have two drivers instead of just one." Next up for Refn is a film shooting in Bangkok, and Gosling is reteaming with Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance.

Best Actor winner DuJardin (The Artist) got the biggest ovation of the night and did a little dance upon hitting the stage. He told the press, "I'm in another world. I thought it was impossible to get the money to make it even though it was a wonderful idea. I'm gonna make the most of this. I would be stupid not to." But that doesn't include Hollywood films necessarily. "I'm a French actor, I want to do French films." The Weinstein Company will release the fllm in late fall, while Warner Bros has it in France. This will be one to watch during Oscar season. Dujardin could be another Roberto Begnini waiting to happen in the Best Actor race, although I wish he had given more credit to his Jack Russell terrier co-star Uggy.

The jury's split of the Grand Prize (second place) was interesting in that it went to two former Cannes winners back with more of the same, and with Malick taking top honors that makes it three former winners (he won Best Director in 1978 forDays Of Heaven) grabbing the top three prizes. The Dardenne brothers have won two Palme d'Ors and said they were thrilled to get a prize, even an unaccustomed second place one, for their Kid With A Bike.

Turkey's Nuri Bilge Ceylan seemed even more surprised than I was that his very long, very slow Once Upon a Time In Anatolia got a prize at all, particularly since it was the absolute last film of the competition to screen, not even ending its premiere showing until after 1 AM Sunday morning. "My film is not easy, especially on the last day. I thought that could be quite tiring for the jury and the press as well," he said and I will SECOND that. Its Cannes imprimatur may help it get U.S. distriiubtion like his 2008 winner,Three Monkeys, but good luck trying to drum up an audience for this one.

It's quite interesting that no matter who seems to be on the jury, they often go to the same well in Cannes, where it appears minimalist filmmakers like Malick, the Dardennes and Ceylan still rule. I guess they have a right to do what they want, but with such a great year I think it's a shame there couldn't be some love for Almadovar's provocative The Skin I Live In, Aki Kaurismaki's wonderful La Havre,Nanni Moretti's Habemus Papam and certainly Tilda Swinton's towering work inWe Need To Talk About Kevin, which was also brilliantly directed by Lynne Ramsay.

But that's the beauty of Cannes. Everyone's got an opinion and are not afraid to express it anywhere you go in this town. Perhaps, then, it's entirely appropiate that a jury headed by De Niro, a man who does not use a lot of words, honored so many films that didn't use them much either including the silent The Artist, The Tree Of Life, Once Upon A Time In Anatolia, Drive and Kid

With The Bike.

Some of the films in the other competitions like Directors' Fortnight winner Les Geants and Critics Week pick Take Shelter along with many in Un Certain Regard were just as good as the main competition winners. It was a bountiful year all around from the films to the market to the weather -- sunny every day in every way, a big turnaround for Cannes and hopefully a portent of things to come for the industry. Already the festival's very well received opener,Midnight In Paris, is breaking records for Woody Allen, and Tree Of Life has already opened in France, so this Palme d'Or could really mean something business-wise. The award hasn't meant much in America, but with Tree opening next week the publicity value is better than usual.

Cannes is an intoxicating place at festival time, a place where film rules in every way 24/7. To quote a line from one of the official entries this year, Alain Cavalier'sPater: "If it is a movie, it's real."

South Korea, Germany share key Cannes sidebar prize

South Korean director Kim Ki-Duk's wrenching cinematic self-portrait and a German drama about the final days of a dying man shared a coveted sidebar prize at Cannes on Saturday, as the festival cruised toward its awards climax.

Iranian dissident Mohammad Rasoulof, 37, won the Un Certain Regard section's best director prize for "Goodbye", but authorities at home kept him from attending the world's top film festival.

The section's jury president, Serbian director Emir Kusturica, announced the winners for best picture, Kim's "Arirang" and "Stopped On Track" by Germany's Andreas Dresen, at a glittering ceremony.

The runner-up award went to Russian film-maker Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Elena" about a docile woman in a relationship with an colder, wealthier man who learns he does not have long to live.

"Arirang", which drew a lengthy standing ovation when it screened during the 12-day event, is an emotionally raw film exercise aimed at curing a crippling bout of "director's block".

The picture shows Kim, who won prizes at Venice and Berlin for "3-Iron" and "Samaritan Girl", living in self-imposed exile and grilling himself on camera about his own perceived failings as a director and a human being.

Accepting the award, Kim sang a few bars from a melancholy folk song about the hills and valleys of life that also serves as the film's title.

"Stopped On Track" follows a healthy 40-year-old who discovers he has only a few months to live after he is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

Determined with his wife and children to live a normal life, he turns to his iPhone to keep an emotional diary, but the decision to care for him at home tears at the family as much as it pulls them together.

Dresen, 47, said the film was inspired by tragic events in his own life.

"Last year was a year of separation and the death of close friends," he said.

"When you make movies, you have the possibility of putting all those emotions in a bottle hopefully. It has reached the Mediterranean and this festival."

Dresen had already scooped up a Jury Coup de Coeur prize in the same section in 2008 for his groundbreaking drama "Cloud 9" about the erotic lives of septuagenarians in eastern Germany.

Rasoulof's wife accepted the directing prize on his behalf after mounting speculation about whether the film-maker, who is appealing a lengthy jail sentence for his work, would be allowed to leave Iran.

"I thank the crew and those who helped this film get here, the festival and the jury," she said, wearing a grey silk coat and with a loose headscarf over her hair.

Two-time Cannes winner Kusturica, 56, said heading the Un Certain Regard jury had been a highlight of his Cannes experience.

"I accepted with great honour because I grew up in the main selection here," he said. "In 25 years coming to this place, I never saw a film here."

The Cannes main competition wrapped up Saturday with the last of the 20 films vying for the prestigious Palme d'Or screening ahead of a gala awards ceremony Sunday.

Hollywood legend Robert De Niro is president of the main jury.

CANNES: In Un Certain Regard, 'Arirang' And 'Stopped On Track' Tie For Top Honors

In the Un Certain Regard category that consisted of 21 films from 19 different countries, the top prizes was shared by the Kim Ki-Duk-directed Arirang and the Andreas Dresen-directed Halt Auf Freier Strecke (Stopped On Track).

The Special Jury Prize went to the Andrew Zvyagintsev-directed Elena and directing prize went to Mohammad Rasoulof for Be Omid E Didar (Au Revoir). Latter award is poignant considering Rasoulof and Jafar Panahi were hit with six-year jail sentences by the hard line Tehran government. The harsh sentences have resulted in an outcry among organizations including Amnesty International, filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and festivals that include Cannes, which made sure to include films by both directors in the festival.

The Un Certain Regard jury was headed by Serbian director Emir Kusturica, and was comprised of French actress Elodie Bouchez, UK critic Peter Bradshaw, Tribeca's Geoffrey Gilmore, and Morelia Festival director Daniela Michel.

Already Atiq Rahimi with cinematic film “Earth and Ashes” from Afghanistan was awarded the Prix due Regard vers l'Avenir at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Cinereach supports feature-length nonfiction and fiction films that are at the intersection of engaging storytelling, visual artistry, and vital subject matter.
Grant amounts can range from $5,000 – $50,000 per project and can be awarded to support any stage of production, including research and development, production and post-production. There are two grant cycles per year (Summer and Winter). Within each cycle, between five and fifteen projects are selected to receive support.
Independent of our biannual grant cycles, the Cinereach Award is occasionally presented to completed films that exemplify the Cinereach mission. Past recipients have been selected through an internal nomination process in connection with the Human Rights Watch Film Festival.

Midnight in Paris, the new film by Woody Allen will open the Festival de Cannes on May 11^th in the LumièreTheatre, in the presence of the Jury presided by Robert De Niro.

The romcom, which was shot last year in the French capital, brings together a broad international cast, including Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard, as well as Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Gad Elmaleh and Léa Seydoux.
Following London (Match Point) and Barcelona (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), it’s the turn of Paris to be honoured by the lens of the New York film director most appreciated by European audiences.

"Midnight in Paris is a wonderful love letter to Paris", declared Festival director Thierry Frémaux. "It’s a film in which Woody Allen takes a deeper look at the issues raised in his last films: our relationship with history, art, pleasure and life. His 41st feature reveals once again his inspiration."

Produced by Médiapro (Spain) and Gravier Productions (New York), and distributed by Mars Films in France, the film is to be released in France the same day it is screened at Cannes. Discovery Fast-Tracks 'Bin Laden Dead' Documentary

Discovery Channel will air an hourlong documentary focusing on the killing of Osama bin Laden on May 15.
Airing at 10 p.m. EST, the Bin Laden Dead special will feature "an intimate, second-by-second account" by local reporters and cameras on the ground in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and examine the black ops mission that resulted in the terrorist leader's death.

“Bringing Osama bin Laden to justice is one of the biggest stories of our country’s lifetime,” Discovery Channel president and GM Clark Bunting said Tuesday. “Discovery Channel’s global reach, strong partnerships and unique nonfiction storytelling ability allow us to delve deep into this story and provide viewers with answers to the questions they are asking as well as context and historical perspective.”
The special will also air on Discovery's sister networks: Military Channel, Science, Investigation Discovery and Planet Green in addition to airing internationally.

Documentary screening honours slain war journalist Tim Hetherington

TORONTO — Journalist and filmmaker Sebastian Junger will pay tribute to friend and colleague Tim Hetherington at a special screening of their war documentary, "Restrepo," this weekend.

Hetherington, a celebrated war photographer, was killed in Libya earlier this month while on assignment.

Junger will host a Q&A session after a special showing of their Oscar-nominated film, in which he and Hetherington were embedded with U.S. soldiers stationed at an Afghan outpost.

The charity event is being hosted by the documentary film festival Hot Docs, National Geographic Films and Realscreen magazine.

All proceeds will go to charitable organizations selected by Hetherington's family in his memory.

The screening is being held Saturday at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

'Restrepo' Filmmaker Tim Hetherington Reportedly Killed In Libya

The 2011 Oscar-nominated documentary "Restrepo" did a marvelous job capturing the dangers and horrors of war in Afghanistan, thanks to the unspeakably brave efforts of co-directors Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger. Sadly, it appears that war has claimed the lives of one of those filmmakers.

ABC News reports that Hetherington was killed today in Libya. The award-winning photojournalist reportedly died during a mortar attack in Misrata, Libya, and it's been reported that a second photographer, Chris Hondros, was also killed. Three other journalists are believed to have been injured in the attack as well.

The news was first reported on French photographer Andre Liohn's Facebook page. Liohn said that he was in the hospital with both Hetherington and Hondros at the time of their deaths. The original Facebook post is currently unavailable, though numerous reports and condolences continue to pour out on Twitter and other social networking outlets.

Hetherington, who was 41 at the time of his death, tweeted about his current conditions the day before his death: "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO."

"Tim was one of the bravest photographers and filmmakers I have ever met," said ABC News' James Goldston, who worked with Hetherington on numerous Nightline specials. "During his shooting for the Nightline specials he very seriously broke his leg on a night march out of a very isolated forward operating base that was under attack. He had the strength and character to walk for four hours through the night on his shattered ankle without complaint and under fire, enabling that whole team to reach safety."

"Restrepo" details the year that Hetherington and co-director Junger spent embedded in the 2nd Platoon of Battle Company in Afghanistan, offering viewers a horrifying firsthand account of the brutal conditions of warfare. It's a fantastic documentary that grows tragically more poignant in light of Hetherington's death. Netflix users can currently watch the documentary on instant watch.
